Tramontana (N), Greco (NE) , Levante (E), Scirocco (SE), Ostro (S), Libeccio (SW), Ponente (W) and Maestro (NW) are the names of the eight winds of Italy. Originating in ancient Greek as essential for farmers minding crops and for ancient sailors who depended on the directional winds to help power their ships across the Mediterranean, Italy now uses the modern compass rose as an ever-important meteorological tool and its’ likeness as a display of history and art. You can find many examples of wind roses around the Vatican city and its museums.
